Madrid Drops Montecarmelo Selur Depot, Recasts Site as Park With Minimal Facilities

The rethink follows intensifying neighborhood protests.

Overview

  • Councillor José Antonio Martínez-Páramo announced the reversal on March 11 at the Fuencarral–El Pardo district plenary, a day after local demonstrations swelled.
  • The redesign removes workshop machinery, fuel stations, silos, compactors, loading docks and a recycling point, retaining only changing rooms for 30 workers plus storage for cleaning carts and 20 parking spaces.
  • Most of the 14,000-square-meter parcel will be reclassified as green space for a new park funded with €2 million that will include a bike lane.
  • The City pledged a full ‘blindaje’ barring any cleaning depot in the Montecarmelo neighborhood and ruled out previously considered alternative sites.
  • Municipal officials later clarified they intend to maintain cleaning service quality and improve worker conditions without executing the Selur base at this location.
