Madras High Court Seeks ECI Response in PMK 'Mango' Symbol Dispute

The case tests who the Election Commission recognises as the party’s leader ahead of the 2026 elections.

Overview

  • Chief Justice M. M. Shrivastava and Justice G. Arul Murugan directed the Election Commission of India and Tamil Nadu’s Chief Electoral Officer to file responses within three weeks.
  • S. Ramadoss’s petition asks the court to quash a July 2025 ECI communication on the symbol that was sent to Anbumani Ramadoss’s Chennai address and to issue a fresh communication to his address.
  • In his affidavit, the PMK founder alleges Anbumani submitted forged documents to the ECI to claim continued presidentship, a charge the son contests through counsel.
  • The bench declined to hear Anbumani’s senior counsel since he was not a party to the case, and he said he would move to be impleaded.
  • Earlier in Delhi High Court, ECI counsel said the Commission would freeze the mango symbol for the 2026 polls due to the leadership dispute, while current ECI records list Anbumani as the recognised PMK president.
