Madras High Court Blocks Use of ‘Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa’ Material in ‘Aromaley’

The order responds to allegations of unauthorized reuse of VTV scenes and score in Aromaley.

Overview

  • Justice N. Senthilkumar issued an interim injunction on November 19 restraining the makers of Aromaley from using scenes or background music from the 2010 film Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa.
  • RS Infotainment asserts producer ownership under a February 16, 2009 joint-venture agreement and cites economic rights under Sections 14 and 17 and moral rights under Section 57 of the Copyright Act.
  • The suit names Mini Studio LLP as the producer-defendant in RS Infotainment v. Mini Studio LLP, OA 1086 of 2025 and CS (Comm Div) 293 of 2025, cited as 2025 LiveLaw (Mad) 428.
  • The plaintiff seeks to restrain any digital or OTT release of Aromaley and has named Disney+ Hotstar as a concerned platform in the case filings.
  • Aromaley opened in theatres on November 7, and RS Infotainment highlighted VTV’s continued value, noting a 2022 re-release and prolonged exhibition, to support the need for urgent relief.
