Madhya Pradesh Launches Rs 2,500-Crore, 139-Day ‘Jal Ganga’ Drive to Restore Water Systems

The third-year campaign pairs large-scale works with community participation to revive water sources across all 55 districts.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Mohan Yadav launched the third phase in Indore on March 19, timing the start with Gudi Padwa and positioning the effort as a people’s movement.
  • Officials set a 139-day timetable through Ganga Dussehra for projects aimed at maximizing rainwater harvesting and strengthening long-term water security.
  • Priority works include building and reviving ponds, repairing wells and stepwells, improving canals, rejuvenating dry rivers, expanding groundwater recharge, and maintaining more than 10,000 check and stop dams.
  • The Chief Minister inaugurated and laid foundations for over Rs 23 crore of Indore projects, including restoration of Bilawali, Limbodi, Chhota Sirpur and Nipania ponds.
  • Authorities cited earlier gains as the platform for scaling up, noting 3,000-plus urban sources rejuvenated, 86,000-plus farm ponds and over 550 Amrit Sarovars created, and more than 100,000 wells recharged, alongside plans to treat 57 rivers and 194 polluted water bodies under the Gangotri Green Scheme.
