Madhya Pradesh Issues Show-Cause Notice to IAS Officer Over 'Brahmin Daughters' Remark

The government has given Santosh Verma seven days to explain his comments, warning that disciplinary proceedings could follow.

Overview

  • The General Administration Department cited alleged breaches of the All India Services (Conduct) Rules, 1968 and referenced possible action under the Discipline and Appeal Rules, 1969.
  • Verma’s remark at an AJJAKS event on November 23 suggested limiting reservation to one person per family until a Brahmin “gives away his daughter” to his son or has a relationship with him, a line captured in a viral clip.
  • Brahmin organisations filed complaints seeking FIRs in multiple districts including Bhopal, Gwalior, Singrauli and Raisen, with one protest blocking traffic at Rashanpura Square before brief detentions and releases.
  • Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla called the comments objectionable and divisive and said action would follow if Verma’s response is unsatisfactory, as leaders from both BJP and Congress demanded measures.
  • Verma issued a clarification expressing regret and saying his words were taken out of context during a discussion on criteria for reservation, while coverage also recalled past allegations against him from 2021.
