macOS 27 Brings Native Ultrawide Modes and Direct Touch

The release moves macOS toward iPhone‑style touch interaction as software groundwork for possible future touchscreen Mac hardware.

Overview

  • Apple published the first macOS 27 developer beta at WWDC26 on Monday and documented native ultrawide support that can drive example modes such as 5K at 120Hz and restore display layouts when monitors are reconnected.
  • The new ultrawide support promises higher-resolution modes and persistent monitor arrangements but Apple has not disclosed which Mac chips, display panels, cables, or connection standards will enable those modes.
  • macOS 27 adds a pull‑to‑refresh gesture called “Swipe down to refresh” that Apple says will work in apps including Safari, Mail, News, Podcasts, and Calendar.
  • Sidecar gains direct touch so users can tap and interact with macOS UI on an iPad using a finger, and the feature requires an Apple silicon Mac running macOS 27 plus a compatible iPad on the same Apple ID, same Wi‑Fi network, Bluetooth enabled, and within about 10 meters.
  • A public beta is planned later this summer with a full release in the fall, and observers note these software changes may foreshadow a rumored touchscreen MacBook expected in early 2027 but that device remains unconfirmed.
