Overview
- PeruRail resumed operations on the Machu Picchu–Hidroeléctrica stretch Monday, restoring trains after a weeklong shutdown.
- The halt followed a March 30 huaico, a rain-driven mudslide, at Mandor around kilometer 115 that ripped up the rail bed and pushed rails toward the Vilcanota River.
- Ferrocarril Transandino finished repairs Sunday, clearing debris, rechanneling the Mandor stream, and replacing the damaged rail structure with support from the Machu Picchu municipality.
- The companies say service depends on stable weather, a warning reinforced by a separate huaico that also stopped this corridor in January.
- The restart reopens the popular Santa Teresa route used by residents and tour groups, and the tourism minister says visitor flows are picking up.
