M61 Crash: Father Found Dead by Family 28 Hours Later Prompts Police Inquiry

The watchdog told the force to run a local investigation into how an iPhone Crash SOS alert was handled.

Overview

  • Relatives found 37-year-old Nadeem Hussain dead in his Audi at 1:56am on March 23, about 28 hours after a crash off the M61 near junction 9 at Clayton Brook.
  • Lancashire Police said an iPhone Crash SOS alert tied to his phone came in shortly after 10pm on March 21, then the control room closed the log after a failed call back.
  • He was reported missing at 2:14pm on March 22 and graded medium risk, and police say his family are being supported by specially trained officers.
  • A Home Office post-mortem found he died instantly, and investigators say the Audi hit trees down a wooded embankment where it was hidden from view.
  • The force referred the case to the IOPC, which directed a local investigation now under way, and a GoFundMe set up by Chloe Townson is raising money in his memory.
