M5 Motorist Who Hit 149mph Gets Suspended Sentence and 12-Month Ban

Police described the late-night driving on a damp, unlit stretch as an extreme danger to road users.

Overview

  • Paiwand Siamand, 25, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, using a vehicle without insurance, and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.
  • He was sentenced at Bristol Magistrates’ Court to 36 weeks in prison suspended for two years, a 12-month driving disqualification, 150 hours of unpaid work, and £272 in costs.
  • An on-duty officer in an unmarked car recorded the Volkswagen Golf R at up to 149mph between junctions 24 and 25 before stopping it at junction 25 in Taunton.
  • The offence occurred on November 8, 2025, on a damp, unlit section of the M5 with moderate traffic, according to Avon and Somerset Police.
  • PC Nick Steele said a car traveling at 149mph would cover more than 100 metres before a driver could even react to a hazard.
