Lynx Confirmed Near Doubice as Saxony Verifies Return of Released Male 'Juno'

Monitoring now focuses on whether the animals are settling rather than just passing through the region.

Overview

  • A Eurasian lynx was photographed on 13 March near Doubice in the Czech Elbe Sandstone area about seven kilometres from Germany, and authorities confirmed the species.
  • A family travelling by car captured the nighttime images and reported the encounter to Bohemian Switzerland National Park officials.
  • The Czech nature agency said the sighting is positive for the environment and will track movements to determine if a territory is forming or if the animal is a transient.
  • Saxony’s environment agency confirmed through genetic analysis of a urine sample near Fláje that the roaming male is 'Juno,' released on 18 March 2024, last photographed in September 2024 and undetected for roughly 18 months.
  • RELynx Sachsen has released seven lynxes in the Eibenstock/Westerzgebirge area since 2024, one ('Anton') died in a 2024 truck collision, releases in Saxon Switzerland were dropped, and two additional releases are planned for late summer.
