Lung Cancer Tops Deaths in Rhineland-Palatinate as Vorarlberg Sees Falling Mortality

The new registry data point to population aging as the driver of rising case totals despite stable or falling age-standardized risks.

Overview

  • In 2024 in Rhineland-Palatinate, about 1,350 women and 1,760 men were diagnosed with lung cancer, with roughly 1,020 women and 1,400 men dying from it.
  • Across all cancers in the state in 2024, about 12,500 women and nearly 14,630 men received a diagnosis, and about 5,300 women and 6,140 men died.
  • Breast cancer remains the most common diagnosis in women and prostate cancer in men, followed for both by lung and colorectal cancers.
  • Over the past decade, male cancer incidence and mortality edged down as female figures rose, which the IDG links to shifting smoking patterns.
  • Vorarlberg’s 2023–2024 averages show 2,078 first-time cancer cases a year and long-term declines in mortality (about 3% annually for women and 2% for men), alongside ongoing evaluation of mammography screening and targeted projects for underserved groups.
