Lumilagro to Open 15 Stores, Hire 60 in Retail Expansion

The push into company-run shops signals a shift from local manufacturing to a lower-cost import model fueled by record sales of its Termo Pampa.

Overview

  • Lumilagro, which announced the plan Friday, will launch 15 company-run stores and add 60 jobs in a first phase.
  • CEO Martín Nadler said total hiring will top 100 as demand for the new Termo Pampa drives the expansion.
  • The first confirmed sites include Shopping OH! Recoleta in Buenos Aires plus Rosario, Córdoba and Mar del Plata, with negotiations under way for Salta, Neuquén and other cities.
  • The company has paused most factory output in Tortuguitas and now imports glass ampoules from India and Vietnam and stainless-steel thermoses from China, which it says cuts costs about 35%, while keeping some assembly and a steel line in Argentina.
  • The reconversion followed falling demand for glass models and cheaper rivals, reduced the plant workforce with totals that vary across reports, and ignited a national debate over imports versus local industry.
