Lula Inaugurates Federal University Hospital in Divinópolis

The federal takeover brings committed annual maintenance funding and equipment spending while expansion is made conditional on municipal land expropriation.

Overview

  • The inauguration took place Friday, June 19, 2026, as the federal government formally assumed the Hospital Universitário da UFSJ in Divinópolis and opened the facility for phased operation.
  • The government pledged R$341 million a year for maintenance split between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health, plus R$85 million earmarked for hospital equipment purchases.
  • The hospital will operate 100% under the public health system and is planned to reach 198 beds and full services by around April 2027, serving roughly 1.3 million people across 54 municipalities.
  • President Lula said the federal government will finance a campus expansion if the Divinópolis city government expropriates about 8,000 square meters of adjacent land.
  • Ministers used the ceremonies to link the health investment to broader regional development, announcing a R$19.5 million procurement for BR-494 work and authorization to duplicate BR-262, while Health Minister Alexandre Padilha publicly criticized policies of former national and state leaders and contrasted current transfers to Minas Gerais with 2022 levels.
