Luke Ronchi to Leave New Zealand After India Series to Coach Melbourne Renegades

The move hands Ronchi a season-long rebuild task at a Renegades side reported to have minimal staff and few contracted players.

Overview

  • New Zealand Cricket confirmed on Friday, July 17 that Luke Ronchi will remain as the national batting coach through the home India series from October 22 to December 1 before quitting to become head coach of the Melbourne Renegades.
  • Ronchi has been New Zealand's full-time batting coach since 2020 and is credited with helping deliver the 2021 World Test Championship title and a 3-0 Test sweep in India in 2024.
  • The Renegades and Melbourne Stars formalised a wider Melbourne coaching reshuffle on the same day, with Cameron White moving to the Stars and Ronchi replacing him at the Renegades.
  • Reporting says the Renegades currently face major administrative and roster shortfalls, with only two reported employees and nine contracted BBL players, positioning Ronchi to lead a significant rebuild of the club.
  • New Zealand Cricket has begun the search for Ronchi's successor and said it will name a replacement in due course while Ronchi finishes his commitments with the Black Caps.
