Lufthansa Tests 'Light Cleaning' on Short‑Haul Economy Flights

The two-week trial gauges whether needs-based tidying speeds turnarounds to cut costs.

Overview

  • The limited trial, which runs March 16–29, covers about 20 European short-haul routes.
  • Economy cabins skip full cleans between flights, with crew doing spot checks, toilets cleaned on request, and seat-pocket trash not removed by default.
  • Business and First retain normal cleaning, and Frankfurt, Munich, and overnight stops are excluded from the test.
  • At some external stations, internal plans trim cleaning crews from four people to two, which would extend each team’s time on a plane.
  • Passenger complaints and crew pushback have surfaced, and Lufthansa already reversed a plan to stop pre-arranging seatbelts, with results to be reviewed after the test.
