Lufthansa Technik Breaks Ground on 55,000 m² MRO Hub in Portugal
The investment aims to anchor Lufthansa Technik’s maintenance capacity in Portugal, create up to 700 skilled local jobs, reinforce links to Portuguese routes to South America and Africa, and establish a TravelTech and AI hub
Overview
- Lufthansa Technik began construction in Santa Maria da Feira after an official groundbreaking ceremony attended by Portuguese leaders and company executives.
- The 55,000 square metre facility will specialise in repair of engine parts and aircraft components and will be operated by Lufthansa Technik Portugal, founded in 2024.
- The group has committed a three‑digit million‑euro investment to the project and expects the site to start operations in 2028.
- Lufthansa projects the hub will create up to 700 highly skilled jobs at the facility and more than 1,000 direct jobs across its Portuguese operations over time.
- The wider package includes a TravelTech and AI hub in northern Portugal and the first help alliance entity established outside Germany in Europe, which Lufthansa says deepens its long‑term industrial and social ties with Portugal.
