Lufthansa Pilots Set 48-Hour Strike March 12–13 With Middle East Routes Exempt

The walkout follows failed talks over pensions at Lufthansa, with separate pay demands at Cityline unresolved.

Overview

  • Vereinigung Cockpit called more than 5,000 pilots at Lufthansa and Lufthansa Cargo to strike from 00:01 on March 12 to 23:59 on March 13, with Lufthansa Cityline pilots stopping work for 24 hours.
  • Flights departing from German airports are expected to face large-scale cancellations and delays, while Lufthansa says affected customers will be notified and rebooked where possible on other Group carriers.
  • VC excluded flights to and from specific countries in the Middle East and Arab region, listing Egypt, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Iraq, Israel, Yemen, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
  • The union says no negotiable employer offer is on the table after multiple rounds of talks, as it presses for improved pension terms at Lufthansa and Cargo and a new pay deal at Cityline.
  • A February 12 strike led to about 800 cancellations affecting roughly 100,000 passengers, and Lufthansa has described the new action as harsh while signaling readiness to resume talks and mediation.
