Overview
- Lufthansa Group, which on Tuesday, April 28, starts selling the new entry fare, will fly tickets under the tariff from May 19 on short and medium routes.
- The Economy Basic fare includes only one small personal item sized up to 40×30×15 cm, and a cabin trolley or checked bag now costs extra starting at €15.
- The policy applies across the group’s network carriers including Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian, Brussels, Discover, Lufthansa City Airlines and Air Dolomiti.
- Lufthansa says many day travelers do not need larger bags and prefer a lower base price, and it is also moving to four Economy tiers with the existing Light fare now changeable for a fee.
- Europe’s consumer group BEUC is pursuing legal action to keep a free trolley in addition to a personal item, while airline lobby A4E argues customers willingly pick cheaper bare-bones tickets.
