Lufthansa Debuts 1-2-1 Business Class on A380 as First Retrofitted Jet Enters Service

The update signals a push to keep the A380 competitive without waiting for Allegris certification.

Overview

  • The first upgraded A380, registration D-AIMC, entered commercial service Thursday on LH452 from Munich to Los Angeles.
  • Lufthansa chose the Thompson Aero Vantage XL seat in a 1-2-1 layout, giving every passenger direct aisle access and more privacy with adjustable dividers.
  • The new cabin fits 68 business seats that are 58 centimeters wide and convert to beds at least two meters long, down from 78 in the old layout to create more personal space.
  • A Panasonic entertainment refresh adds 18-inch screens, Bluetooth headphone pairing, a 3D moving map, flight cameras, and a simpler menu across all cabins.
  • Lufthansa plans to refit all eight A380s by mid-2027, with the second jet (D-AIMH) now in Dresden for about 12 weeks of work at Elbe Flugzeugwerke, so travelers should expect mixed cabins during the rollout.
