Lufthansa Bans In-Flight Use of Powerbanks, Tightens Carry Rules Across Group

The change reflects updated safety guidance following recent battery fires.

Overview

  • The policy took effect on January 15, 2026, and prohibits using or charging powerbanks during flights.
  • Passengers may carry a maximum of two units only in hand luggage, stored in the seat pocket, on the person, or under the seat, not in overhead bins or checked bags.
  • Powerbanks up to 100 Wh are allowed without approval, those between 100 and 160 Wh require airline authorization, and anything above 160 Wh is not permitted.
  • The rules cover all Lufthansa Group airlines and apply equally to e-cigarettes and other battery-powered inhalers, with possible exceptions for medically necessary devices.
  • Lufthansa says the measures align with EASA and IATA guidance, passengers are being briefed on board and by pre-flight email, and typical phones and laptops are unaffected by the thresholds.
