Lucas Trejo Hospitalized After Wife and Two Children Found Dead in Venezuela Quake

His relatives in Argentina are urgently raising funds to travel to La Guaira to receive the remains and arrange an imminent cremation.

Overview

  • A powerful double earthquake struck Venezuela on Wednesday, June 24, and after a 74-hour search the bodies of Trejo’s wife Yanina Maranella and their children Aarón (7) and Ainhoa (5) were recovered from the collapsed La Guaira building.
  • Trejo was concentrated with his club in Caracas when the quakes hit, returned to La Guaira and spent more than 70 hours helping remove rubble during the search for his family.
  • Medical staff have kept Trejo sedated and under hospital care in La Guaira because he is in shock and has no nearby relatives to support him, his sister said in media interviews.
  • Relatives in Argentina are scrambling to raise money and travel immediately to Venezuela so they can be with Trejo, receive the bodies and complete the planned cremation and repatriation steps.
  • The case is part of a larger disaster response: the Argentine government confirmed multiple nationals dead and missing, Venezuelan authorities reported thousands of casualties, and consular and humanitarian aid teams are handling hundreds of requests.
