Lucas Museum Names Two Theaters and Unveils Nonstop Inaugural Film Program

The nonstop drop-in film program with rare archival and commissioned screenings is designed to make cinema a central, accessible part of visits.

Overview

  • At San Diego Comic-Con on July 27–28, 2026 the Lucas Museum detailed its inaugural Film Program and announced two theaters named for filmmakers Robert Flaherty and Slavko Vorkapich.
  • The museum is set to open to the public on September 22, 2026 and timed-entry tickets are on sale through February 2027.
  • The Robert Flaherty Theater will focus on documentary traditions and will screen a new commissioned series, episodes of the 2024 series The Power of Film, and documentaries about artists in the museum’s collection.
  • The Slavko Vorkapich Theater will highlight montage and experimental motion with early silent films, classic and experimental animation, anime excerpts, an episode of Star Wars: Visions, and George Lucas’s student films.
  • The 100,000-square-foot campus will open with roughly 1,300 works across 33 galleries and an outdoor park, and the combined film-and-collection approach reflects founders George Lucas and Mellody Hobson’s goal of linking cinema and visual art for both neighborhood visitors and destination audiences.
