Lt Gen Balbir Singh Takes Command of Kashmir’s Chinar Corps

The veteran counterinsurgency commander brings long Kashmir experience to the Army’s lead formation in the Valley.

Overview

  • The Srinagar-based XV Corps changed command Friday as Lt Gen Balbir Singh succeeded Lt Gen Prashant Srivastava, who moves to Quarter Master General at Army Headquarters.
  • The Chinar Corps guards the Line of Control with Pakistan and runs internal security and counterterrorism operations across the Kashmir Valley.
  • Balbir Singh earlier served as Major General Staff at Northern Command, worked at 8 Sector in Lolab, led 1 Sector Rashtriya Rifles in 2018–2019, and commanded the Victor Force from 2023.
  • After taking charge, he paid homage at the Chinar War Memorial and said he would work closely with the civil administration and local communities to strengthen peace and stability.
  • During Srivastava’s 19 months, the Corps led Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev tied to the April 2025 Pahalgam attack, stepped up counter-infiltration along the frontier, and secured an incident-free Amarnath Yatra 2025.
