LSU to Erect Statue Honoring Sylvia Fowles

The decision recognizes her collegiate excellence, making her only the second woman to receive a campus statue.

Overview

  • LSU announced Wednesday that it will place a statue of Sylvia Fowles outside the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on the Baton Rouge campus.
  • Fowles starred at LSU from 2004–2008, leading the program to four straight Final Fours and leaving as the school leader in rebounds, blocks and free throws.
  • After college she was the No. 2 pick in the 2008 WNBA Draft, played 15 seasons and won two WNBA championships with the Minnesota Lynx.
  • Fowles issued a statement thanking the university and LSU coach Kim Mulkey praised the honor during a Zoom call that surprised Fowles.
  • The statue will make Fowles the seventh LSU athlete honored this way and only the second woman after Seimone Augustus, and the university has not yet announced an unveiling date.
