Low-Intensity Blast Near Imphal Airport Leaves No Injuries

The banned Kangleipak Communist Party claims it planted the device as a warning over blockades and alleged cargo smuggling.

Overview

  • The explosion near the airport fence by a crematorium in Malom went off Sunday and coincided with the third anniversary of Manipur’s ethnic conflict.
  • CCTV footage shows an unidentified person on a blue scooter arriving around 11:34 am, placing the device, and riding away toward Bishnupur.
  • Police secured the area, registered a case at Singjamei police station, and are reviewing surveillance video to identify the suspect.
  • The KCP said it carried out the blast to protest frequent bandhs and blockades and to warn airline managers it accuses of aiding tobacco and liquor smuggling.
  • In a separate operation a day earlier, security forces reported seizing an 8 kg IED and a rifle and arresting an active PREPAK-PRO cadre during searches in vulnerable areas.
