Louvre to Fully Restore Empress Eugénie’s Crown Damaged in 2025 Heist

A museum-appointed expert panel will oversee a competitive, heritage-code process to choose an accredited restorer.

Overview

  • Newly released images and a condition report show the crown was badly deformed after thieves forced it through a narrow cut in its case and dropped it.
  • The piece remains nearly intact, retaining all 56 emeralds and all but about 10 of 1,354 diamonds, though one of eight golden eagles is missing.
  • The Louvre says the headpiece can be reshaped and returned to its original state without reconstruction.
  • The advisory committee, chaired by Louvre president Laurence des Cars, includes curators and scientific specialists and will invite representatives from five historic jewelry houses.
  • Investigators have arrested four alleged crew members, traced movements of the loot to a suburban parking garage, and are still seeking the mastermind and the eight missing items.
