Louisiana Man Accused of Killing Mother and Grandmother Arrested in Mobile

A multi-state search using license-plate readers pointed investigators to Alabama.

Overview

  • Mobile police arrested 22-year-old Lee Collins III on Monday and are holding him pending extradition to St. Bernard Parish.
  • Deputies say an argument inside a family home on Easter Sunday turned deadly when Collins allegedly shot his mother, Trenelle Collins, 55, and grandmother, Mary Major, 75, who later died at a hospital.
  • Sheriff James Pohlmann said Collins tried to shoot his father during the incident but missed, and other people in the home witnessed parts of the violence.
  • Investigators say Collins fled in a stolen white 2019 Ford stake-bed truck with Louisiana plate Z258037, and license-plate cameras showed the vehicle crossing into Mississippi around 9 p.m. Sunday as agencies across Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama coordinated the search.
  • Mobile police said staff at a local mental health facility flagged Collins after he gave a false name, allowing officers to confirm his identity as the suspect wanted on two counts of second-degree murder while the investigation continues.
