Louisiana Cancels May House Primaries, Sets Nov. 3 Open Vote
The shift follows a Supreme Court ruling.
Overview
- Act 7 moves Louisiana’s U.S. House races to the Nov. 3, 2026 open primary with a Dec. 12 runoff if needed.
- Any votes already cast in the canceled House contests are void, and officials cannot release those results even if the races still appear on some ballots.
- All other items on the May 16 ballot, including the U.S. Senate race and five constitutional amendments, will proceed as scheduled.
- Candidates must qualify Aug. 5–7 for the fall ballot, or submit a nominating petition with 250 voter signatures by July 9.
- The Secretary of State will refund the state’s portion of qualifying fees to affected House candidates, and prior petitions for those races are canceled.
