Los Angeles Hires Tetra Tech to Fortify and Relight the Sixth Street Viaduct by 2028

Officials aim to restore the landmark’s signature illumination by hardening its vulnerable wiring.

Overview

  • The Bureau of Engineering selected Pasadena-based Tetra Tech, which began design work in January, to restore lighting across the bridge before the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
  • Plans call for reinforcing pull boxes, service cabinets and conduits and adding a security camera system to deter wire theft and vandalism.
  • Officials put the total contract at $5.3 million for the bridge and the adjacent Sixth Street PARC project, with roughly $1 million for bridge design work.
  • Nearly seven miles of copper wire were stolen since 2023, leaving the viaduct’s roadway, stairway and arch lighting dark for extended periods.
  • City policy steps include a Metal and Wire Theft Reward program and support for a state crackdown on copper theft, while the PARC recreational spaces are expected to debut later this year.
