Los Angeles County Sues Roblox Over Alleged Child Safety Failures

The filing follows a new Georgia investigation that demanded company records under the state’s consumer-protection law.

Overview

  • Los Angeles County’s complaint accuses Roblox of unfair and deceptive practices that exposed children to sexual content, exploitation and grooming, seeking injunctions, abatement and civil penalties of up to $2,500 per violation per day.
  • The lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court by County Counsel Dawyn R. Harrison on behalf of the People of the State of California, with officials Hilda Solis and Rafael Carbajal criticizing the company’s safeguards.
  • Roblox said it strongly disputes the allegations and highlighted measures such as blocking image exchange in chat, expanded moderation, cooperation with law enforcement and a global rollout of Facial Age Estimation for chat access.
  • On Feb. 17, Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr issued a Civil Investigative Demand seeking records on reported harms, parental controls, moderation systems, age verification, adult–child interactions and marketing claims.
  • Authorities cite recent cases, including the recovery of two missing Florida girls after contacts with a 19-year-old on Roblox and a 2023 coercion of a 12-year-old, as catalysts for expanding state and local actions against the platform.
