Los Alerces National Park Battles Two New Fires Deemed Intentional

A pre-dawn boat and air assault followed a declaration of intentional ignition.

Overview

  • Park officials confirmed two active outbreaks in the southern Puerto Ciprés–Población Burgos sector about 800 meters from the north bank of the Río Grande–Futaleufú near Trevelin.
  • The Comando Unificado deployed 43 forest firefighters by boat with tools and pumps, and launched aerial water drops with a helibucket helicopter, two water-bombing planes and two amphibious aircraft.
  • The main focus is affecting roughly 4 hectares, while a smaller focus spans 400–500 meters in a canyon that complicates ground and air access.
  • Federal Police forensic teams were dispatched after a criminal complaint, and authorities restricted navigation on southern Futalaufquen and the Amutuy Quimey reservoir and closed the La Balsa and Laguna Toro trails.
  • The December fire that scorched more than 16,000 hectares remains contained under monitoring during a regional heat alert for high temperatures and low humidity, and no injuries or damaged homes have been reported from the new outbreaks so far.
