Lorry Driver Admits Causing Death by Careless Driving in 2022 Willingham Crash

Sentencing on 14 April is scheduled after the court indicated the custody threshold is met.

Overview

  • Kevin Miller pleaded guilty at Peterborough Crown Court after prosecutors accepted a lesser charge following consultations with police, expert witnesses, the CPS and the victim’s family.
  • Unsecured crane equipment hanging over his lorry’s trailer struck 30-year-old Rebecca Ableman as she pushed her daughter along a footpath in Willingham on 22 September 2022.
  • Ableman suffered catastrophic head and brain injuries and died three weeks later at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.
  • Judge Matthew Lowe ordered a pre-sentence report and released Miller on unconditional bail pending the April hearing.
  • Miller told police he was unaware of the collision until stopped more than two hours later, as the truck carried scrap metal from King’s Lynn docks to Network Rail depots.
