Longroad’s Sun Pond Solar-Plus-Storage Plant Starts Deliveries to California Power Providers

The Arizona project adds battery-backed capacity that shifts daytime solar into evening demand.

Overview

  • Sun Pond, which reached commercial operation Tuesday, is now sending contracted power to Ava Community Energy and San José Clean Energy.
  • The site pairs 111 megawatts of solar with an 85 megawatt, 340 megawatt-hour battery to store daytime output for later use.
  • Ava and SJCE are community choice aggregators, which are local public power agencies that buy electricity for residents in Alameda, San Joaquin, and San José.
  • Longroad says the plant will supply roughly 35,000 homes each year and avoid about 145,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide.
  • The project sits inside Longroad’s Sun Streams complex in Maricopa County, which the company says will deliver more than $300 million to Arizona schools and communities through leases and taxes.
