Lockdown at CCRI Warwick Lifted After Report of Possible Gun in Nearby Woods

Police are still seeking a person tied to a backpack containing an airsoft gun plus a pellet rifle.

Overview

  • The Warwick campus locked down Tuesday after a report around 8:45 a.m. of a person near the Knight Campus with what looked like a gun, and CCRI sent a "run, hide, fight" alert urging people to shelter and silence phones.
  • Warwick Police led a search of the woods along Commonwealth Avenue with Rhode Island State Police, campus detectives, K‑9 teams and drones.
  • Officers found a backpack that matched a witness account, and inside were an airsoft gun and a black pellet rifle.
  • The college lifted the lockdown about 1:30 p.m., with police guiding people out via the second‑floor ramp and all classes canceled for the day.
  • Police say they have information on a person of interest and are still looking, and they reported no known threat to nearby schools, businesses or residents.
