Overview
- Lloyds announced the Scam Check feature on Monday as a new in‑app safeguard that will appear in certain payment journeys across the Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland mobile apps.
- When a customer tries to pay a new seller the feature will ask simple questions and invite screenshots, then use AI to scan item and seller details for red flags and show a clear warning if the deal looks suspicious.
- The system is programmed to flag signs such as unusually low prices, newly created or unrated seller accounts, vague descriptions, deposit requests and pressure to act quickly.
- The launch builds on Lloyds’ wider fraud work after the bank said it stopped more than £1 billion in attempted fraud in 2025, has invested about £100 million in fraud technology, and checks roughly 23,551 transactions per minute using its DarkHorse indicator.
- The move has government backing from the Minister for Fraud and aims to cut victim losses and speed case handling by combining automated checks with AI tools that already support staff reviewing transactions in real time.
