Liverpool Police Make Three Arrests After City Centre Machete Attack

The force has widened stop-and-search powers to curb youth knife violence in the busy city centre.

Overview

  • Police investigating the assault said two new arrests were made today and a machete was recovered from an address in Bootle.
  • The new suspects are a 17-year-old on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon, section 18 assault and affray, and an 18-year-old on suspicion of affray and assisting an offender, and all three suspects are on police bail.
  • The first arrest came earlier in the week when a 16-year-old was detained on suspicion of affray and then bailed with conditions that bar him from the city centre.
  • Officers used a temporary Section 60 order, which allows enhanced stop-and-search without usual grounds, to conduct 60 searches that led to two arrests linked to domestic abuse and three on suspicion of cannabis possession.
  • Police also responded to a separate report of a 15-year-old stabbed at Albert Dock, and they say extra patrols and the stop-and-search zone aim to prevent further violence as the area sees heavy footfall.
