Liverpool Man Jailed for Stamping Seagull to Death in Blackpool

An RSPCA probe sparked by CCTV led to the conviction, prompting fresh warnings about frequent attacks on gulls.

Overview

  • Anthony Nurse, 31, received a six-week sentence at Preston Magistrates’ Court on November 19 after admitting an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
  • CCTV from December 17, 2024, showed him kicking at gulls on Springfield Road in Blackpool and stamping on one bird three times, causing its death.
  • The footage was sent to the RSPCA, which issued a public appeal that led to Nurse being identified and prosecuted.
  • RSPCA Inspector Daniel Tomlinson collected the bird’s remains and credited a member of the public for enabling the investigation.
  • Nurse initially denied involvement and appeared for sentencing via videolink from custody on unrelated matters, as the RSPCA highlighted reports of severe cruelty to gulls roughly every three days.
