Lipowitz Pushes Pogacar, Takes Romandie Runner-Up by 42 Seconds

A streak of spring podiums signals rising form before a focused Tour de France build.

Overview

  • Florian Lipowitz finished second overall at the Tour de Romandie after Sunday’s summit finish in Leysin, crossing the stage line three seconds behind Tadej Pogacar and ending the race 42 seconds down.
  • On the 14.3 km final climb, Lipowitz launched repeated attacks that only Pogacar could follow, with the world champion later saying Lipowitz “did a good job” and forced a hard fight to the line.
  • Pogacar won four of the five stages and the overall title, and Lipowitz again emerged as the closest rival as the rest of the field trailed by well over a minute.
  • Lipowitz plans a short rest, joint Tour de France stage reconnaissance at altitude, a Sierra Nevada training camp, and the Tour of Slovenia in June before the Tour’s July 4 start in Barcelona.
  • The Romandie result marks his third straight podium this spring after Catalonia and the Basque Country, reinforcing his claim to Tour leadership alongside Remco Evenepoel and his belief he feels better than last year.
