Lion Kills Restaurant Worker Near Kovaya in Gujarat

Scat analysis of two captured lions will be used to confirm whether they caused the death.

Overview

  • Forest and police teams found the victim’s body parts early on Tuesday, June 16, and identified him as Prakash Chandra, a restaurant worker from Pithoragadh in Uttarakhand.
  • Officials reported a pride of four lions in the area and later rescued two adult lions while mounting efforts to recover two cubs thought to belong to the same group.
  • Pipavav Marine Police Station registered an accidental-death case and said distant CCTV footage captured the attack as Chandra walked home late at night.
  • The Gujarat Forest Department said it will run forensic scat tests on the rescued animals to confirm responsibility while the state ordered more trackers and round-the-clock patrolling.
  • Local leaders and residents warned that rising lion numbers in Amreli, locally cited as 339, have increased human–lion encounters and prompted calls for more forest staff and surveillance after a recent second fatal attack in the area.
