Linux Hits Record 5.33% on Steam in March

A fix to Steam China reporting likely lifted Linux's share in Valve's optional survey.

Overview

  • Valve's March 2026 Steam Survey reports Linux at 5.33 percent, the highest share on record.
  • Windows' share fell 4.28 points to 92.33 percent, while macOS rose to 2.35 percent.
  • Valve also logged a 31.85 percent drop in Simplified Chinese usage and a 16.82 percent rise in English to 39.09 percent after correcting Steam China reporting.
  • About one quarter of Steam's Linux players reported using SteamOS, the Arch Linux–based system that powers Steam Deck.
  • The surge followed a February low of 2.23 percent, highlighting how this opt-in sample can swing with measurement changes as well as real user shifts.
