Lima Transport Firms Set March 5 Protest to Demand Enforcement of Anti-Extortion Law

The sector says promised protections remain unrealized despite a surge of extortion-related killings.

Overview

  • ATSUPER, which represents more than 100 formal operators in Lima and Callao, called a “hombre-máquina” mobilization involving drivers and vehicles.
  • Protesters plan to gather at Plaza Dos de Mayo or Plaza San Martín and march through the historic center to Congress and the Government Palace.
  • Organizers are pressing for the implementation of Law No. 32490, which establishes preventive measures and compensation for families of slain drivers.
  • The coalition also demands activation of the GIES interagency unit, saying it is not functioning despite being designed to coordinate the PNP, Judiciary and Prosecutor’s Office.
  • Police have linked recent driver homicides to groups including “La Nueva Federación” and reported arrests, while transport leaders call the state response inadequate and fault the government and Congress.
