Lima Halts Javier Prado Fast-Track Road Project Pending Technical Review

A new commission, which the mayor says will include engineers, the architects’ guild, Invermet, Emape and neighborhood representatives, will issue a report before any work resumes.

Overview

  • The Metropolitan Municipality of Lima confirmed the temporary suspension after meetings between Mayor Renzo Reggiardo, San Isidro Mayor Nancy Vizurraga and residents, with the project on hold until a final technical report is delivered.
  • Planned works included a S/269 million, 1.8 km elevated bridge from Las Begonias (San Isidro) to Av. Arenales (Lince) with two lanes each way, plus a complementary 1.66 km viaduct along Javier Prado–Sánchez Carrión; execution was assigned to Invermet with a 540‑day timeline.
  • The review follows warnings cited by media from the Comptroller’s Office and the Economy Ministry about potential cost overruns, technical documentation gaps and possible overlap with future Metro Lines 3 and 4.
  • Residents raised urban and environmental concerns, including the possible removal of more than 300 trees and the loss of about 5,000 m² of green space, and questioned whether elevated viaducts would ease congestion.
  • City officials pledged regular meetings with neighbors, and the mayor indicated the commission’s report is expected in the coming weeks to determine whether the project proceeds as planned or is adjusted.
