Overview
- Local governments in at least nine Lima districts have issued orders requiring homes, businesses and public institutions to display the Peruvian flag for Fiestas Patrias.
- The Municipalidad Metropolitana de Lima set a Cercado de Lima window from July 15 to July 31 while other districts such as Los Olivos, Surco, Miraflores, Barranco, Jesús María, San Isidro, Independencia and Magdalena del Mar require flag display for varying July periods.
- Rules include technical limits such as one flag per property, prohibition of flags on windows or balconies in some areas, and a requirement in some districts that private premises use the flag without the national coat of arms.
- Municipal fiscalization units are notifying owners and will impose fines reported as S/1,375 for the Historic Center, S/550 elsewhere in the Cercado and up to S/5,500 for improper use or alteration of the flag.
- The measures, timed for the 205th anniversary of independence, combine civic promotion with practical obligations that could raise costs for households and businesses and increase demand for proper flags and maintenance services.
