Lima Begins Demolition on Av. Nicolás Ayllón to Expand Lanes in Ate

The clearance opens the way for Ate to build two new lanes to ease traffic on the Central Highway.

Overview

  • Lima’s municipal team, which moved in Saturday with about 700 police officers and heavy machinery, began demolishing 20 properties at block 66 to recover roughly 2,800 square meters for lane expansion.
  • A round-the-clock detour plan started at 12:00 a.m., sending light vehicles through 26 de Mayo, Santa María, and Miraflores, with heavy trucks routed via Marco Puente Llanos, Nueva Esperanza, and Esperanza.
  • Officials said occupants were notified in January and that some left on their own as staff helped move goods to districts like San Juan de Miraflores, El Agustino, and Puente Piedra after outside interference slowed removals.
  • Owners of a nearby fuel station at Nicolás Ayllón and Santa María requested decommissioning through the environmental regulator OEFA, and the city said it will secure the removal with police support.
  • Once the land is cleared, Metropolitan Lima will assign the road works to the Ate district to build two lanes in each direction, part of a wider push to free public space and cut chronic congestion on the Central Highway.
