Light Snow Brings Code Yellow Alerts and Slower Commute Across the Netherlands

Authorities reported mostly manageable roads after extensive gritting, yet scattered slick patches led to many minor crashes and longer morning delays.

Overview

  • ANWB measured roughly 800 kilometers of traffic jams around 08:30 while Rijkswaterstaat logged about 430 kilometers, both above a typical Thursday peak.
  • KNMI’s advisory covered nearly the whole country early on, then eased through midday with warnings lifted in provinces such as Utrecht and Gelderland and remaining in parts of Overijssel, Flevoland, Drenthe, Groningen, Friesland and the Wadden.
  • Regional media reported numerous weather-related incidents, including cars sliding into ditches near Buren and Groenlo, a crash into a tree at Voorthuizen, collisions near Veenendaal and on the A1, and vehicles off the road in Oldeberkoop, Wesepe and elsewhere.
  • Rail operators maintained precautionary adjustments in the North with NS services decoupled at Zwolle, while Arriva and Qbuzz ran regular schedules and unrelated faults caused isolated disruptions near Arnhem and Almere.
  • Emergency services also handled separate incidents, including a house fire that forced evacuations in Arnhem overnight and a planned A59 closure for police forensic work into a previous highway shooting.
