LG Halts 8K TV Production, Leaving Samsung as Last Major Holdout

Manufacturers are pivoting to visible picture improvements over higher resolution.

Overview

  • LG confirmed it has stopped making 8K OLED and LCD TVs, and LG Display has put 8K OLED panel development on hold with the option to restart if demand improves.
  • Samsung is effectively the only major brand still offering an 8K set in 2026, narrowing its lineup to the single QN990H model.
  • Global 8K TV sales peaked at about 386,800 units in 2022, fell to 214,400 in 2023, and were projected near 136,800 for 2025, far below early expectations.
  • Panel supply has tightened as LG Display, Samsung Display, BOE, Innolux, and TCL CSOT largely halted 8K production, leaving AU Optronics among the few still manufacturing 8K panels.
  • Adoption faltered due to scarce native 8K content, limited perceived gains at normal viewing distances, and HDMI 2.1 delivery limits, while makers emphasize larger screens, OLED and mini‑LED advances, and AI upscaling.
