LG Energy Solution Starts Production at Lansing Battery Plant

The plant raises LGES's North American LFP capacity toward more than 50 GWh by year-end 2026, strengthening U.S. battery supply for utilities, automakers, grid projects

  • LG Energy Solution, which started production on Tuesday, opened its 226-acre Lansing, Michigan, plant to make lithium-iron-phosphate cells for grid-scale energy storage and nickel-manganese-cobalt cells for Toyota electric vehicles.
  • The facility is targeting more than 35 GWh of annual cell output at full scale and currently employs about 900 people with a planned workforce of roughly 1,700 when fully ramped.
  • Lansing-made LFP cells will be integrated into complete storage systems by LGES Vertech, and utilities including DTE Energy are contracted to use the plant’s batteries in future grid projects.
  • The company says the Lansing start helps push North American LFP capacity above 50 GWh by the end of 2026, which LGES projects will account for about 80% of its global energy-storage manufacturing.
  • LGES has invested over $2 billion in the site since 2022 and opened Lansing as part of a broader industry pivot toward energy storage to offset weaker EV battery demand and meet forecasted rapid growth in U.S. storage markets.
