Lexington Police Shooting Victim Identified as Colin Barthelemy, 26

Prosecutors will seek a judicial inquest to examine whether the use of deadly force was criminal.

Overview

  • The Middlesex District Attorney's Office, which on Tuesday identified the man as Colin Barthelemy, said the shooting remains under active review.
  • Police were called around 1:40 p.m. Saturday after Barthelemy’s father dialed 911 for medical help, reporting his son had injured himself with a large kitchen knife.
  • Officers escorted Barthelemy’s parents from the Lexington home and set a perimeter while he stayed inside the house.
  • When he came out holding a knife, officers tried less-lethal force twice, then a Wilmington officer assigned to the regional NEMLEC unit — in town for Patriots’ Day coverage — fired a fatal shot, and that officer was taken to a hospital as a precaution.
  • Prosecutors say they will ask a court for a formal inquest to review possible criminal conduct, and they have not confirmed whether emergency medical or mental-health responders were on scene.
