Overview
- Dozens of seventh- and eighth-graders from Lexington, Massachusetts evacuated a burning tour bus on I-93 in Woodstock, New Hampshire on Friday, and one adult was hospitalized for smoke inhalation.
- The engine compartment began to smoke just south of Exit 32, the driver pulled over, and firefighters arrived to find the rear of the bus fully engulfed in flames.
- All northbound lanes at Exit 31 closed for about 90 minutes as traffic was diverted and crews knocked down the fire.
- New Hampshire State Police estimated about 60 people were on board, while Lexington Public Schools later said roughly 50 students and staff from Diamond Middle School were on that bus during an annual ski trip, and only one of the trip’s buses was affected.
- Students walked with staff and troopers to a nearby business in Lincoln to wait for a replacement bus, and investigators continue to review the cause as State Police say no criminal element is suspected.
