Lewiston Teens Charged After Apartment Is Shot Up
Police say the arrests reflect a rise in youth gun violence and could lead to additional charges as investigators continue the probe.
Overview
- Police say officers responded to 125 Pierce Street after reports of gunshots and found spent shell casings and multiple bullet holes in an apartment about 11 p.m. Saturday.
- Five teenagers between ages 14 and 16 were arrested in what police called a retaliatory attack, with two 16-year-olds and a 15-year-old charged with criminal conspiracy to commit murder.
- All of the charged youths were sent to the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland and police told reporters they expect more charges as the investigation continues.
- Lewiston officials say the arrests follow weeks of youth-related incidents, including earlier May arrests and recovered firearms, and that several of the teens arrested this weekend are repeat offenders.
- Local leaders have called for a community response and support services, and organizations such as Maine Immigrant & Refugee Services and Tree Street Youth Center are expanding programs aimed at keeping teens off the street.
